How this works and what it does not do
What it is
Aphasia Practice is practice material for adults with aphasia after a stroke or brain injury, and for the person who practices with them.
You choose an activity, a step and a number of items. The tool shows one item at a time.
A cue is shown only when you ask for one. The last cue always gives the word itself.
You can stop at any moment. Nothing is timed, and nothing reminds you to come back.
There is no account and nothing to install.
What it does not do
- It does not measure speech or language.
- It does not tell you how you are doing, and it does not mark any choice.
- It does not choose a step for you, suggest one or change one.
- It does not listen. It uses no microphone and no camera, and it records nothing.
- It does not say how often to practice, and it sends no reminders.
- It does not answer questions about health.
- It makes no claim about what practice will do for any person.
Who wrote it
Written by [name], MD, PhD, a physician. The author is not a speech-language pathologist.
The activities
If you practice with someone
The partner guide says where to sit, how long to wait, how to offer a cue and when to stop.
Plain explanations
What is free and stays free
- Every activity in this version, at every step.
- Every item in this version.
- Cues, read aloud, the partner guide and the partner view.
- Choosing the step and the number of items.
- The list called What we practiced.
- Printing any set and its partner sheet.
- The practice line, the safety line and every other safety statement.
- Seeing, saving and erasing everything stored on your device.
- Every setting for text size, contrast, the side of the controls and read aloud.
Nothing you need in order to practice today, to practice safely, or to use the tool with a disability will ever be behind a payment.
What is stored
Nothing leaves your device. Nothing you do, choose or see in a set is sent anywhere.
Your settings, your last choices, the list of days and the items already shown are kept in this browser, on this device. You can see them, save a copy and erase them at any time.
If something in an item looks out of place
Tell us the words of the item. Say nothing about anyone's health.
More about this tool
This is practice material. It is not medical advice and it is not speech therapy. It does not replace a speech-language pathologist.
Sudden new trouble speaking or understanding is an emergency. Call 911 or your local emergency number now. Tell your doctor or speech-language pathologist about trouble swallowing or changes in mood.
